The Three Questions That Decide This For You

Almost every bad outcome we see traces back to one of these going unasked at the point of signing.

What is the total monthly cost?

Quote-based pricing is not automatically a red flag, but a number you cannot see before a sales call is a number you cannot compare. Ask for the full monthly figure in writing, including anything billed separately.

How long is the contract?

Notice periods and auto-renewal terms are where most complaints originate. Ask what cancellation actually requires, how much notice, and whether the term renews automatically if you say nothing.

Who owns the domain and the website?

This is the one that costs people years of accumulated search equity, and the one least often asked. The domain should be registered in your business name, with you holding the registrar login.

Bundled National Vendors

One invoice covering website, advertising, listings and reviews. Convenience is the product. The trade-offs are quote-based pricing, longer contracts, and websites built on the vendor’s own platform.

Hibu

Cedar Rapids-based, selling websites, search and social ads, and listings to local service businesses. BBB Accredited with an A+ rating and 3.65 out of 5 across 363 reviews — genuinely split. Pricing is quote-based and sites are built on Hibu’s own platform.

Townsquare Interactive

A division of Townsquare Media (NYSE: TSQ). A+ letter rating without accreditation, and 44 complaints over three years. Publishes no pricing at all — the pricing page is a quote form and a phone number.

Thryv

Software-first rather than agency-first: CRM, scheduling, invoicing, messaging and marketing in one platform, with services layered on top. Suits owners who want operations and marketing in a single system.

Review and Messaging Platforms

Tools rather than agencies. They do one job well, they do not touch your website, and they do not lock up your domain.

The limitation is the obvious one: none of these will build your website, run your advertising, or write anything. They solve a slice.

Podium

Review generation and customer messaging, strongest for businesses where the sale happens over text. Does not touch your website and does not hold your domain.

Birdeye

Reputation and review management across a wide set of directories. We use Birdeye in-house for our own review collection.

Yext

Listings and business-information syndication, built for keeping details accurate across many directories and locations at once.

Website Builders

Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy sit at the opposite end. You own the account, you control the content, and the monthly cost is a fraction of any retainer. The trade-off is that you are the marketer — the platform will not do keyword research, will not write your pages, and will not notice when your rankings slip. A good answer for businesses whose customers do not find them through search, and a poor one for anyone competing on local results.

Wix

The widest template range and a genuine drag-and-drop editor. You own the account and the content outright, and the monthly cost is a fraction of a retainer.

Squarespace

The strongest design defaults of the three. A good fit for businesses that sell on presentation rather than on search visibility.

GoDaddy

Cheapest entry point, and usually bundled with a domain and hosting already registered in your own name.

Which Type Suits Which Business

You want one invoice and one contact

A bundled national vendor. You are buying convenience, so price the convenience honestly and get the contract terms in writing first.

You compete on local search

An independent or local agency, where owning your website and domain outright is the normal arrangement rather than something to negotiate.

You only have a reviews problem

A review platform plus a website you own. Cheaper and far less entangling than buying a full bundle to solve one thing.

You get customers by referral

A website builder. If search is not how people find you, a monthly retainer is money spent on a channel you do not use.

Where The Branding Agency Fits

This is us, so weigh it accordingly. We have been building small business websites and running search campaigns since 2015 — based in Charlotte, working with clients across the country. We publish our pricing and packages rather than quoting on a sales call, we build on WordPress, and the domain, hosting account and site files stay in the client’s name whether they stay with us or not. Locally that means Charlotte website design services and SEO company in Charlotte NC.

Where we are not the right fit: if you want a single bundled invoice covering print, ads and listings nationwide, a vendor like Hibu is built for that and we are not. If you need a marketing department rather than a marketing partner, you want a larger firm.

What Our Clients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single answer, and any list claiming one is guessing. Bundled national vendors typically quote rather than publish, which is why complaint records are often the only public source of real figures. Insist on a written monthly number from every provider you shortlist, then compare like for like.

One vendor is simpler and one throat to choke. Separate providers cost more to manage but fail independently — if your review tool disappoints you, your website does not go with it. The more your business depends on search, the more the separated model is worth the extra management.

You should, in every case, without exception. The domain should be registered in your business name with you as the administrative contact, and you should hold the registrar login. Everything else is recoverable; a lost domain often is not.

SEO and content work genuinely need six to twelve months to show results, so a short contract can be false economy. What matters more than length is the exit: what notice is required, what it costs, and what you take with you.

Comparing a Quote Right Now?

Send every provider on your shortlist the same three questions from the top of this page and compare the replies. If you want a second opinion on what you have been quoted, we will tell you honestly whether it looks reasonable — including when the answer is that you should stay where you are.
